Strategic Planning
Organically managing the R&D Group as a system
Personnel in charge of strategy formulation create various strategies to realize the R&D Group's vision. In addition to environmental analyses related to tobacco products, such as trends among competitors and trends in regulations, we also collect information on science and technology, plan R&D activities by anticipating the future, and consider how to allocate resources by examining and studying the evolution required from the R&D Group in the future from various perspectives. In addition, we consider the R&D Group a single system, strengthen collaboration throughout the entire R&D Group so that all R&D activities—from basic research to product development—proceed effectively and efficiently, and coordinate efforts to improve the organization.
Developing a science and technology strategy based on close communication with the other sites.
As the R&D Group is expected to contribute to the growth of the JT Group through science and technology, one of the strategies created by the R&D Group is a science and technology strategy. The R&D Group's science and technology strategy will be formulated by expressing plans and potential for acquiring technologies that will be necessary in the future, centering around core technologies possessed by the R&D Group. In developing a strategy, it is essential to take inventory of our own technologies and to understand the progress of ongoing projects. Therefore, personnel in charge of strategy formulation are required to have a broad knowledge of tobacco products and science and technology as it related to the R&D Group.
Leading the fostering of the organizational culture
In addition to strategies directly related to R&D activities, fostering organizational culture and teamwork is an important part of strategy formulation. In 2019, the R&D Group integrated its R&D functions in Japan and overseas. And in 2022, it was integrated as an organization. Now that the coordination between Japan and overseas has become stronger, we are working as a united team to further develop our organizational culture. Currently, the R&D Group has members from around 50 countries who speak a wide range of languages and who have diverse range of cultures and customs. We aim to create an organization that uses diversity to create groundbreaking ideas never seen before, leveraging each other's differences as strengths.
