MEMBER INTERVIEW

Thanks for the cooperation from our team and JT&JT International that goes beyond the borders of organizations and countries.

Strategic Planning

Yoshimi Nishio

Formulation of strategies for the entire the R&D Group, external communication of R&D's scientific information, and promotion of innovation activities, etc.

I took pride in my product evaluation studies, which allows consumers to enjoy our products without concern.

After entering this company in 2005, I was in charge of biological testing at the research laboratory responsible for science research, which is required to evaluate whether new technologies and flavors intended for use in tobacco products can actually be used in them. The results of such evaluations serve as important information to determine whether the applicable technology and flavors can be incorporated into products.
Therefore, I made diligent efforts to allow the feedback of high-precision evaluation results to be provided more quickly. To carry out experiments efficiently, it is important to gather as much information as possible on the applicable samples in advance, so I was careful to communicate closely with personnel in charge of product development and product assurance. This kind of work that the team I belonged to is responsible for does not have a form that can be seen in products. However, as a member of the R&D Group, I was proud to be involved in work that is essential for consumers to be able to enjoy the products of the JT Group without concern.

Truly experiencing the JT & JTI members' cooperation, they always stress their willingness to keep supporting each other

In 2019 I was transferred to a department involved in strategy formulation and organizational management of the R&D Group, and since then have been responsible for three main duties. The first is creating systems to distribute information on the research results of the R&D Group; the second is supporting initiatives in the R&D Group to respond to environmental issues, such as reducing greenhouse gases and waste; and the third is promoting innovation activities intended to create environments where research and development personnel can actively engage in work.
In 2017, the JT Group launched a website called “JT Science,” where the R&D Group posts various research results. The first task I mentioned is to arrange a system for the latest information from the R&D Group to be posted on the JT Science site smoothly. The R&D Group is not limited to Japan but also has sites in other countries, and covers a wide range of scientific fields, so it was necessary to create mechanisms to effectively compile the progress and results of research on a global basis. This work is executed in collaboration with members at overseas bases. During discussions all of the members listen carefully even to my clumsy English, and we have been able to bring forth ideas that I could not have thought of on my own. Collaborations like this between JT and JTI are becoming more and more frequent, and I truly feel we have a global system which enables seamless work that goes beyond borders.

I want to establish environments where even more innovative research activities can be executed quickly.

Recently, the R&D Group has been embarking on new challenges which include creating new styles of tobacco products like RRP*, whose market is now growing. I am aware that establishing environments where R&D Group members can proceed quickly with even more innovative research activities while having great freedom in their ideas, and establishing information distribution tools to allow the results of research and development produced by members to be known by many people outside of our company, are my way of making contributions that can bring joy to consumers.
In the team I currently belong to we can take a comprehensive view of the entire R&D Group to understand research and development activities. If we can make the most of this advantage and find points that should be improved, I want to dedicate myself to raising the motivation of R&D members as “One Team” and supporting even more innovative and energetic research and development activities from now on with the involvement of surrounding people, such as by actively making suggestions and obtaining cooperation.
