the R&D Group

We strive to enable the evolution of tobacco products.

Tobacco products, which have long been enjoyed across the world as “Shikohin”, non-essential yet desirable items consumed for pleasurable taste or experiences rather than nourishment, have changed through many different forms over their history according to the needs of people and transitions in the social climate. Even now, the tobacco industry is approaching a significant turning point. Our goal is to create a society where smokers and non-smokers can coexist in harmony. In order to achieve this goal, we are advancing our measures for technological reform and product development through teamwork which applies diverse talents and unique ideas.

We will give rise to new innovations on the global stage.

Since the JT Group is a leading international tobacco company with sales in more than 130 countries and regions, the R&D Group create new products while constantly being aware of the varied preferences of consumers around the world. The market for RRP*, in which vapor generated by heating tobacco leaves instead of burning them is provided for consumers to enjoy, has been expanding throughout the world in recent years, and we are making new attempts toward new styles of tobacco products beginning with RRP*.

The advantages of the JT R&D Group’s research and development policy are that it can engage in research activities from a “bottom-up” stance, starting from innovative ideas created at work sites.
It allows members to move forward with research and development at their own discretion together with professionals from various fields, as they aim to achieve a unified goal as an organization instead of simply doing what they are told.

Our members can play roles on a global stage and surpass the boundaries of research fields.

The research and development fields of the R&D Group, which include RRP* devices, tobacco materials, taste and flavor, and human preferences, require a wide range of specialized knowledge.
Therefore, we actively incorporate new knowledge and technology, and collaborate with many members from Japan as well as overseas bases to combine unique ideas and expertise. The stage for our activities is expanding not only to Japan but also to the entire world.
